During my working days as a pharmacist, facing the question "
What are some differences between branded and generic drugs?" was a part of my daily routine.
The first very obvious difference between the two is the price. Generic drugs, whether over-the-counter or
prescription medicines, are usually priced cheaper than the branded ones. Their distinctness in cost leads to the second difference between the two.

So, what's the difference besides the price tag? Difference number two between generic and branded drugs are the excipients (
inactive ingredients) added by different manufacturers for their products (
products such as tablets, liquids, creams, etc). Excipients are necessary substances which act as carriers for the drug's active ingredients. They also add form to the final product and most importantly create a more convenient and accurate dosage.
Due to the differences mentioned above, patients ask me whether the effects between generic and branded medications vary. The answer is yes but the variation most of the time is too small to be noticed. Since drug manufacturers use different excipients, medicines will vary in color, shapes and taste. Another important detail to remember is that because manufacturers follow different formulae and use different excipients, the uptake of substances by the tissues and the bloodstream will also differ. It's simple. To sum it up, generic companies use cheaper excipients (
reason for generic drugs to be priced a bit lower) which cause a longer time for the body to absorb the drugs while branded drugs are composed of more expensive inactive ingredients which are easier to dissolve by the system. Nevertheless, as mentioned earlier, the difference is too small to be noticed most of the time and yes... they do have the same amount of active ingredients.
So there you go! Now you know a little about generic and branded medications. Perhaps next time, I will also be able to write about the common differences between prescription and non-prescription medications. We'll see!
A tiny piece of advice: the next time you visit your doctor, ask him/her courteously to hand you a generic prescription so you can freely choose whether or not you'll go for the non-branded or the branded drugs. You will definitely save money by doing so!
Have a great Friday everyone!
