A Quick Look On PACS

I have recently heard about picture archiving and communication systems (or simply PACS) through a friend whose father has undergone a heart procedure in the US. My friend who is also a doctor my profession explained the wonders of PACS using the simplest terms possible to me. Fortunately, my tiny brain understands (I have to say) much of it and has been also impressed about PACS.

PACS in layman's terms are computers whose main function is for the storage, retrieval, distribution and presentation of images. PACS manage pictures or images from medical imaging instruments of different kinds such as mammograms, ultrasound, cardiography, colonoscopy, radiography, endoscopy and many more. PACS transmit and report digitally electronic images therefore omitting the stage to file, retrieve photos and transform film jackets manually. With PACS, images can already be accessed and interpreted in a quicker pace --- no more very long waiting time for film processing and image analysis. The invention and introduction of PACS are indeed huge leaps in the advancement of medical imaging equipments which without a doubt will definitely save more lives.

I am happy that somehow my friend has told me about PACS. That's one great information that has just been added to the medical part of my brain. Who knows? One day I might pursue my dream of becoming a surgeon, encounter PACS and remember the PACS-lecture from a physician friend.

Have a great Friday everyone!
